Rose and Bee climb a hill in rural Yorkshire to find mischevious-looking goblins dancing around a cooking pot.
Rose and Bee ponder how best to stop the goblins bothering the nearby village. Rose recounts the tale of an old woman who kept a troublesome goblin up until sunrise, and the goblin turned to stone in the sun. Bee tells Rose that the story's wrong as he's been sunbathing with goblins in the past.
Bee recounts the tale of a vicar who banished a goblin using a pair of iron tongs. Rose points out that the goblins on the hill are currently using iron cooking implements.
The goblins have overheard Rose and Bee, and promise to leave the village alone if they'll tell them some more goblin stories. Rose and Bee agree, and they all sit happily round the fire, listening to Bee tell the tale of The Goblim Market...

Goblins!

This is my entry for the 2021 Observer/Jonathan Cape Graphic Short Story contest, Goblins! It's a short story from the world of The Lore Library, featuring Rose Thornhill and Bee.

The goblins were great fun to draw; the one in the hat is my personal favourite.

I think the tone of the contest was rather too serious for this piece, which is just goofy. But I had fun drawing it nonetheless.
